N.C. Electric Cooperatives encourage members to prepare now before possible outages

Raleigh, N.C. (Feb. 16, 2015)—North Carolina’s electric cooperatives are winter-storm-ready, with crews on standby across the state to restore electricity if the predicted winter storm causes power outages in any of the 93 North Carolina counties served by the cooperatives.

Because power outages are common in ice storms with significant accumulation, the electric cooperatives have crews and equipment ready to begin restoring power as quickly as possible.

Now is the time to take precautions to ensure that you and your family stay warm and safe if there are power outages. The American Red Cross recommends making an emergency preparedness kit that includes water, nonperishable food, flashlights, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, extra batteries, medicines and a first aid kit. It is also a good idea to charge your cell phone and tablet now.

Electric cooperative members are asked to call their cooperative directly if they experience a disruption in power. For phone numbers to report outages and the counties served by each co-op, refer to http://www.ncelectriccooperatives.com/storm/outages.htm.

North Carolina’s electric cooperatives serve more than 2.5 million people in 93 of the state’s 100 counties.
