North Carolina's 26 electric cooperatives serve more than 2.5 million people in 93 counties.

Geographic Area

North Carolina's electric cooperatives deliver energy in 93 of 100 North Carolina counties. More than 97,000 miles of power lines are maintained by North Carolina’s electric co-ops, by far the most of any utility in the state. 

2007 Revenues

A collective $2.6 billion for the North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation, the cooperatives' primary electricity provider, and the state's electric cooperatives.

Recent Historic Growth

The annual amount of electricity delivered by the state’s electric cooperatives has grown by an annual average of 3.8 percent during the past 10 years.

Projected Annual Growth

An average of 2 percent through 2022.

Assets

More than $5.1 billion collectively for North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation and the state's electric cooperatives.

Established

The state’s first electric cooperative was established in 1936, Edgecombe-Martin County Electric Membership Corporation in Tarboro. 

Cooperative Structure

North Carolina’s electric cooperatives are private, independent and not-for-profit entities. Customers own the cooperative and elect a board of directors.

Customer Base

Approximately 99 percent of electric cooperative customers are residential and small businesses.  

Employment

North Carolina’s electric cooperatives collectively employ more than 2,350 skilled people.

Economic Development

In a two year period, the state's cooperatives invest approximately $10 million in economic funding and investment.
